Golden Seal Root

Golden seal comes from the gold-colored root of the Golden Seal plant and has been used for several years because of its medicinal properties. Early people learned about golden seal root from the American Indians, who used it for medicine and dye.

The golden seal root contains the alkaloids, hydrastine and berberine, which are known to be able to destroy bacteria and viruses, in addition to being able to relieve inflammation and congestion. Aside from this, the golden seal root also consists of calcium, iron, manganese, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, B-complex, and many more.

Because of the golden seal roots popularity as a natural remedy, it became extremely in demand and was harvested extensively, resulting in its diminished supply. And so nowadays, most golden seal plants are grown specifically for herbal supplements.

Health Benefits

Golden seal root has antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties.

Because of its anti-inflammatory nature, it is used to treat skin diseases, minor skin wounds, and cold sores. It is also used to soothe inflamed membranes in the eyes, ears, nose, throat and stomach.

Meanwhile, the golden seal roots antibiotic nature helps especially with respiratory problems, colds or flu, as well as its corresponding symptoms such as fevers, congestion and excess mucus.

Golden seal roots can also strengthen the immune system, in addition to cleaning and maintaining healthy digestive functions. It can help with ulcer, indigestion, constipation, stomach ailments, urinary tract infections, and other bladder and intestine infections, while at the same time regulating healthy liver and spleen functions.

When Not to Use Golden Seal

Golden seal root should not be used by pregnant women. People who generally suffer from hypoglycemia, high blood pressure, bleeding or blood clotting disorders should also avoid using golden seal root, most especially if a person is taking medication associated with these ailments like heparin, warfarin, etc.

Side Effects

Besides its beneficial qualities, the golden seal root also contains alkaloids, which can cause gastrointestinal distress from long-term use. There should be a break of two weeks between periods of use.

It is important never to overdose on the golden seal root, as it can be poisonous in large amounts and brings with it certain side effects. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, high blood pressure, nervousness, depression, seizures or convulsions, decreased feeling or paralysis, and even death. Hence, you should see a doctor if you experience these side effects.

Golden Seal Usage

In order for the golden seal root to be effective, it has to contain 8-12% alkaloids, standardized in every capsule of a golden seal supplement.
